New art group for blind and partially sighted people

The Corn Exchange has joined forces with the award winning charity Living Paintings to form a new group for blind and partially sighted people that will meet once a month to experience art, architecture and much more through sound and touch.
The Living Picture Group will meet on the second Monday of every month from 10.30 – 12, and will ‘look’ at paintings and sculptures from Living Paintings’ library before hearing a guest speaker talk about a related subject. Organisers hope that the group will be an enjoyable social activity as well as an opportunity for participants to explore and discuss a wide range of subjects. The first meeting will be on February 9th, and anyone wishing to attend should contact Sam Sampson for details on 01635 582 666 ext. 206.
Kingsclere based Living Paintings has worked tirelessly since 1989 to enable people who are blind, be they young or not so young, to experience everything from Monet’s paintings of waterlilies to The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Their descriptive recordings and raised tactile images work together to give a rich and detailed impression of the picture in question.
The Living Picture Group is part of a number of initiatives aimed at widening participation that the Corn Exchange is currently introducing. These include a monthly autism-friendly film screening, launched just after Christmas, and a drive to improve access to audio description services for films and live events.
